Car Insurance Honda (Car Insurance). Im a girl who wants to learn how to fix cars...will this be hard?Im a girl who wants to learn how to fix cars...will this be hard? Hi so im tired of mechanics taking advantage of me and i want to learn how to fix my own car or giving me make believe problems... im pretty smart and usually can do anything i am taught. is it hard to learn how to fix your own car? i been changing my tires and adding fluids since 15, now 23. I was once a mechanic. I was also once a girl. I've done both. Pulled them off successfully. Now I'm living a great life in San Fransisco with my partner Gregory. We have cheese and crackers for every meal. Don't forget the white wiiiiiiiiine lol. ^.^ It's no harder than learning about anything else. It won't be easy on some cars. Even for guys its hard. Just have patience and learn as much as you can about the cars you want to work on. Your best bet is to go on the web forums. There is a wealth of information and usually people that will help you. One high payoff training for you is to take a community college course on the current On Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) computer controlled fuel injection standard designed into most 1996 and newer cars and light trucks. Then buy your own OBD-II "scanner" (not just a "code reader"), from companies like http://www.actron.com Also plan for the next generation of OBD which may be the European CAN standard in US vehicles. Question for you: What OBD technology is being used in the new hybrid vehicles? It's not hard to learn more about cars and how they work or how to fix them although there is a lot to learn on how the various systems and components operate...theory of operation.. But some repairs are simple and within the means for people to do...they just need a few skills, tools and knowledge. Pick up some basic auto repair books at a local library and read up on them. Watch some shows on how to do your own repairs. Check out websites like this one that explain car repairs and other info/tips. http://cartalk.com/ since you are gonna be working on your own car, it shouldnt be that hard since its only gonna be one car you are going to learn how to fix, and then if you have more than one you can use what you already learned, join a forum for your car and ask questions there, learn as much as you can about your car, like what common problems it has and such, and good luck. Not at all. When I was going through college getting my automotive degree there were pleanty of people there just to learn more about their own cars. You won't have to go all out, and know how every single sub system works on multiple manufacturers and models like "car freaks" like me. A simple general understanding of things should suffice to do most repairs (or at least know when you're getting hosed by the shop). Or you could take the whole ball of wax with a degree like I did. I would sugest buying a repair book on your car, check out some auto tech books, and read up! Try tearing into your car (or better yet a lawn mower) just to see how it works. When I was a kid used to take thing apart just to see how they worked. Just be ready to spend some money on new gaskits! it depends dear. some things are pretty easy to fix and some things can be pretty hard to fix. but anything you can do yourself will be a money saver, plus you will feel better that you did it yourself. if it,s going to be on your car then get a haynes book. it will tell everything you need to know and how to fix it. i think that is great you want to fix your own car. Won't be any harder for you than it would be for a guy, except in those infrequent cases where sheer raw strength is needed. Then again, if you can handle a tire iron, I wouldn't worry about that. Honda . Ideas to Stop an Oil LeakAs an engine gets old, oil leaks can be expected. The main causes of oil leaks are the loosening of bolts and the wearing of gaskets, which are usually not too difficult to repair. The real challenge is figuring out exactly where the oil leak is coming from. Start with a Clean Engine Before you tackle the project of making your engine leak-free, it's a good idea to start with a clean engine. Use a foaming engine cleaner to get as much oil as you can off of your engine. Raise the front of your car on jack stands and clean the bottom of the engine as well. Cleaning the bottom of your engine will be more important than the top when trying to trace an oil leak. Usually, cleaning an engine is fairly simple: Just warm up your engine slightly, cover all electrical accessories and the carburetor or throttle body and coat all of the surfaces with foaming engine cleaner. Let the cleaner sit and emulsify for a few minutes before hosing everything off. Getting the Leaks Going Once you have a squeaky-clean engine, it's time to find out where your oil leak is coming from. Take your car out for a short drive on a clean road. Drive long enough for your engine to completely warm up and go through its normal pace of driving rpms before heading home and parking on clean asphalt of concrete. Do not park on old oil stains. Tracing the Leaks Once home, get your car back up on jack stands and try to find any leaks that may have started during your drive. Using a flashlight, examine all mating surfaces in which oil may leak from. Some key areas to inspect are around the edge of the oil pan, around the timing cover, the bottoms of valve covers, around the oil filter, around the distributor and the edges of the intake manifold. Look for wet areas and follow drips from the bottom of the engine up to their source. Stopping the Leaks Once you figure out where the oil is coming from, it is much easier to stop the leak. The first thing to try is to tighten the nuts or bolts that hold the two mating surfaces together. Use a torque wrench if you can and torque the questionable nuts or bolts to factory specifications. After doing this, clean your engine again and go for another drive. If the leak persists, you will have to replace the gasket where the surfaces meet. Use a high-quality gasket and sealer. Replace the PCV Valve A properly working PCV valve keeps the internal pressure inside your engine under control. If you have a clogged PCV valve, pressure may build up inside your crankcase and cause oil to blow out through the gasket surfaces. To test if your PCV valve needs to be replaced, pull it out of the valve cover and shake it. If you can hear a rattling, the valve is good. If not, replace it. "Stop Leak" Products Any mechanic worth his salt will tell you that "in-a-can" products that advertise the ability to stop oil leaks are dangerous and not worth the money. Pouring a product that is designed to stop leaks may also clog small oil passages that keep vital engine parts lubricated. Do not use these products.
Honda . How to Do an Oil Change on a 2008 HighlanderIn 2001, Toyota released an all-new, car-based SUV -- the Highlander. This vehicle gave customers the utility of an SUV, but the comfort of a family car. In 2008, Toyota redesigned the Highlander, giving it an aerodynamic and luxurious look. The 2008 Highlander came fitted with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 270 horsepower. Toyota recommends changing the oil in this 3.5-liter engine every 5,000 miles. After changing the oil, reset the oil change reminder light. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Floor jack Jack stands Drain pan Combination wrench Clean shop cloths Drain plug gasket Six-point socket set Torque wrench Ratchet 7 qts. API-certified 5W-30 engine oil Toyota tool No. 09228-06501 (64 mm oil filter cup) New oil filter kit Step by Step : 1 Park the Highlander on a hard, flat surface and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. 2 Open the Highlander's hood and remove the oil filler cap to provide ventilation while draining the oil. 3 Raise the front of the SUV with a floor jack and slide jack stands under the subframe. Lower the Highlander until only the jack stands support the Toyota's weight. 4 Crawl under the vehicle and locate the oil drain plug on the oil pan -- the large, metal pan at the on the bottom of the engine. Slide the drain pan under the drain plug. 5 Loosen the drain plug with the closed end of a combination wrench. Remove the drain plug with your hands. Allow the oil to drain until only small drips come from the oil pan. 6 Remove the old gasket from the drain plug and clean the oil drain plug with a clean shop rag. Install a new gasket on the drain plug and hand-tighten the drain plug into the oil pan. Torque the drain plug to 30 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and a six-point socket. 7 Slide toward the front of the vehicle and locate the oil filter access panel -- a roughly 4-by-4 inch panel with "Oil Filter" stamped on it. Remove the two bolts securing the panel to the splash guard with a ratchet and socket and pull the panel from the splash guard, exposing the oil filter cap. 8 Slide the drain pan under the oil filter cap. Remove the oil filter drain plug -- the metal screw in the middle of the oil filter cap -- with a ratchet and a hex-bit socket. Allow the oil to drain from the oil filter drain plug. 9 Remove the oil filter cap using Toyota tool No. 09228-06501 -- 64-mm oil filter cup -- a ratchet and socket. Step by Step : 10 Pull the oil filter from the oil filter cap. Place the blade of a flat-head screwdriver under the O-ring on the oil filter cup and pry it out of the groove on the cup. Pull the O-ring from the oil filter cap. Step by Step : 11 Install a new O-ring -- included with the new filter -- on the oil filter cap and roll it towards the top of the cap until it seats in the groove on the cap. Set the new filter inside the oil filter cap. Step by Step : 12 Place a small amount of oil on your finger and coat the O-ring with oil. This allows you to tighten the oil filter cap without the O-ring bunching up. Step by Step : 13 Hand-tighten the oil filter cap. Torque the oil filter cap to 18 foot-pounds using the 64-mm oil filter cup, a torque wrench and a socket. Reinstall the oil filter access cover and tighten the bolts with a ratchet and socket. Step by Step : 14 Re-install the oil filter drain plug and torque it to 10 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and a hex-bit socket. Step by Step : 15 Raise the Highlander from the jack stands using a floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the Toyota to the ground. Step by Step : 16 Insert a funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in 6.4 qts. of API-certified 5W-30 engine oil. Step by Step : 17 Remove the engine oil dipstick and wipe the oil off with a clean shop cloth. Reinsert the oil dipstick and remove it. Check that the oil on the dipstick reaches near the top dot on the dipstick. Add oil as needed to reach the top dot. Insert the oil dipstick and close the oil filler cap. Step by Step : 18 Start the Highlander's engine and allow it to run for about two minutes. Shut the engine down and wait about one minute. Check and adjust the oil level following the process in Step 15. Step by Step : 19 Insert a funnel in one of the empty oil bottles, pour oil from the drain pan into the oil bottle and close the bottle's cap. Repeat this step until the drain pan is empty. Take the bottles of old oil and the old oil filter to a used automotive fluid recycling center. Many parts stores perform this task free of charge. Resetting the Oil Change Reminder Light Step by Step : 1 Insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the "IG" position, don't start the vehicle. 2 Press the trip reset button under the speedometer until the odometer shows on the display and turn the ignition to the "Off" position. 3 Press and hold the trip reset button and turn the ignition to the "IG" position without starting the vehicle. 4 Hold the trip reset button for five seconds after turning the ignition to the "IG" position. Observe as "Resetting Oil Maintenance Data" appears on the display and the oil replacement reminder light extinguishes indicating you successfully reset the system. 5 Turn the ignition to the "Off" position and remove the key.
